The 9th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan was held
December 4, Moscow. – Sergey Tsivilev, together with the Minister of Energy of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Awais Leghari, held the 9th meeting of the Russian-Pakistani Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation.
Representatives of relevant structures, ministries and departments of the two countries took part in the event.
The parties discussed issues of cooperation in trade and economic spheres, energy, transport, agriculture, culture, science and education.
During his speech, the Chairman of the Russian part of the Intergovernmental Commission Sergey Tsivilev emphasized that the relations between the two countries are based on long-term friendship and trust.
The effectiveness of cooperation is confirmed by the positive dynamics of trade development. The head of the Russian Ministry of Energy noted that over the past 5 years, trade turnover between the countries has increased by 1.5 times, and last year reached a record level of 1.1 billion US dollars. Food products, agricultural products, and mineral fertilizers are exported to Pakistan, and the resumption of Russian grain supplies is expected.
Interaction in the fuel and energy sector continues. During the meeting, it was noted that Russian companies are fulfilling their obligations to supply oil to Pakistan, and work is underway to increase and diversify commodity groups. In addition, the Russian side is considering proposals to participate in a number of investment projects in the oil and gas and electric power sectors, including the construction and reconstruction of thermal and hydropower facilities in Pakistan.
Russia and Pakistan are actively developing cooperation in the transport and logistics sector. Thus, in 2024, the republic joined the North-South International Transport Corridor (ITC) project.
“Pakistan’s connection to the North-South International Transport Corridor will ensure the development of transportation along shorter routes, which will contribute to both an increase in trade turnover and an increase in the volume of transit transportation of goods between our countries. “We agreed to work out a test shipment of cargo using the North-South ITC,” said Sergey Tsivilev.
During the meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission, the parties reviewed the draft Program for the Development of Economic Cooperation between Russia and Pakistan until 2030. Further steps to agree on the document are planned.
Cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector is expanding. In particular, a Memorandum was signed, which envisages intensifying cooperation in localizing insulin production in Pakistan.
Cooperation in the educational sphere is developing. Over the past two years, the number of budget quotas for Pakistani students to study at Russian higher education institutions has been increased (in 2023/2024 – 641 people, 248 students more than in 2022). In Pakistan, the Center for Open Education in Russian and Russian Language Teaching is operating, and the International Humanitarian Project “Russian Teacher Abroad” is being launched.
In conclusion, Sergey Tsivilev thanked the Pakistani side for their productive and well-coordinated work. Following the meeting, the parties signed the final protocol of the 9th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, as well as a number of documents in the fields of trade, education and healthcare.
